I love this wonderful Native story of the importance of releasing anger, resentment, guilt…
“A young boy, who was angry with a schoolmate, told his grandfather about the injustice. His wise grandfather understood his anger, and replied, “I, too, at times have felt a great hate for those who have taken so much with no sorrow for what they do. But hate doesn’t hurt your enemy; it only hurts you and wears you down. Holding on to hate is like swallowing poison and wishing that your enemy would die.”
The grandfather continued with his story: “There are two wolves inside each one of us. One is good and lives in harmony with all. He is compassionate and hurts no one. He does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will fight if it is the right thing to do, and he always fights in the right way.”
“But the other wolf is full of anger. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think, because his anger and hate are so great. It is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.”
The grandfather paused, and his grandson asked, “Which wolf wins?”
The grandfather wisely replied, “The one I feed.””
