Overwhelmed? You bet!

Overwhelmed? You bet!

Just about everyone I’ve encountered is feeling overwhelmed, myself included. Not every day, all the time, but there is more overwhelm.

You are not alone.

There is a simple explanation – there is a lot going on.

Humans are on a gigantic learning curve, and that takes a lot of energy. The things that we used to take for granted we now need to think through. Your subconscious mind runs the program on a day-to-day basis, and it simply doesn’t have reference points for all of the changes that are happening. This means your conscious mind is processing more information daily than it was designed to do.

The result? Overwhelm.

The response? Increase your self-care. It’s that simple.

You might think that is easier said than done! Let it be simple.

forgive myself for believing I don’t have the time or resources to increase my self-care.

I give myself permission to do something just for me – I could use the support.

I can be in overwhelm, or I can gift myself some simple self-care. I choose to gift myself simple self-care.

I can focus on all of the things I can’t do, or I can focus on simple self-care. I choose.

Today, I will go outside and stand in the grass in my bare feet – simple self-care helps me feel grounded and I can use that!

Tonight, I will relax with a couple of friends around the fire – that’s self-care and it feels connected. We will laugh – simple.

Tomorrow, I will start a new novel – that’s simple self-care!

I remember the great summer holiday I had last year that was good self-care. This year I am creating an amazing Self-care Stay-cation. I’ve got this!

I’m good at self-care. When overwhelmed shows up, it reminds me it’s time to increase my self-care.

I’m grateful to myself for listening to what I need, and acting on it!

I’ve included a quick video to support you in transforming overwhelm and finding your solid, grounded self.

How might you explore simple self-care? It’s the perfect antidote to overwhelm.

Were You Ever Grounded As A Teenager?

I don’t mean the kind of grounding where you feel connected to the earth. I mean the kind of grounding that was your parents’ response to something you did. You know, where you weren’t allowed out of the house and couldn’t talk on the phone with your friends.

I’m thinking this may be the closest experience many of us have to the COVID restrictions. Most of us have never been in jail, or lived under a dictatorship, and yet some are reacting to their liberties being taken away. Others are grateful for the safety and security they experienced, and are nervous about things opening up.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I listen to and observe the responses and reactions as the social implications of COVID evolve. We have all experienced social distancing and isolation, and it became a new normal – in other words we got used to it. Some people discovered they really enjoyed the slower pace, the quieter lifestyle.

And then things changed again as some restrictions began to be lifted. People fascinate me. It’s interesting to witness the range of emotions from excited to upset to confused… sometimes all at once! This brings me back to being grounded…

What you did as an adolescent when the “grounding” time was over? You may be noticing some similarities with your behavior now.

And you may be noticing some similarities in the choices and behaviors of others around you.

forgive myself for believing I need to judge myself or others harshly around our reactions to what is happening.

I give myself permission to recognize we are all navigating the best we know how.

I can judge or I can acknowledge. I choose to acknowledge.

I am free to acknowledge how well I am navigating, and support others to navigate from where they are.

acknowledged how well I am moving through this time when I…

am learning to acknowledge where I am at in a gentler and kinder way, and that ripples out to others.

I am grateful for the deeper awareness I have as a result of this COVID time.

I’ve heard the expression “We are all in the same boat” being bantered around a lot since mid March. From my perspective we are all in the same storm, but each of us has a different boat. Some boats are seaworthy while others have leaks. Some are like powerboats, and others like canoes.

May the boat that you are in be secure and move at the pace you feel comfortable moving. And may you come out of this “grounding” experience a more skilled sailor.

It’s Spring! Let it grow!

When I’m trying to figure out how things work, I turn to nature…

Think of a potted plant that just isn’t doing as well as you would like it to. It’s not flowering, and the leaves are looking a little droopy. Digging up and examining the root system will not make the plant thrive – in fact the shock of having its roots exposed will case the plant to wither further.

Rather you might move it to a sunnier – or shadier – spot, give it some plant food and make certain it receives the right amount of water.

You might even talk encouragingly to it, or re pot it into a larger space so the roots can grown and expand and create a healthy plant.

Even if the roots are gnarled and in poor soil, caring attention will make the plant thrive…

The “roots” of your challenges may in fact be well beyond your reach. The soil you were “planted in” may not have been as rich and healthy as you needed. There is significant research showing that many of our beliefs, attitudes and perceptions are actually affected by our experiences before we are born, and some even are transmitted through our DNA. Before you throw up your hands and say “What’s the point?!”, remember the plant…

Whatever the root system of any of your life experiences, the equivalents to sunshine, water and good nutrition will support positive growth…and are within your reach. You can create the conditions for your own positive growth – despite your “roots”. Encouraging words and a change of environment will enhance that support allowing your life to grow and bloom in a new direction!

  • forgive myself for believing I need to get to the root of it.
  • I give myself permission to nurture myself and create new growth.
  • I can examine the roots, or I can support new growth – I choose to support new growth.
  • I am free to nurture myself with thoughts, actions and words that support new growth.
  • Just like a plant, I thrive when I am in a supportive environment.
  • I am creating new growth by creating a supportive environment for myself – beginning with my own thoughts and inner conversations!
  • I’m grateful to myself for encouraging my growth!
